Alex Tanguay to join Tampa Bay Lightning

Alex Tanguay could soon join fellow French-Canadian stars Vincent Lecavalier and Martin St. Louis in South Florida.

Tanguay, an unrestricted free agent after playing last season with Montreal, has reportedly signed with the Tampa Bay Lightning.
The RDS French-language sports network reported Friday that Tanguay and the Lightning had agreed on a contract, pending Tanguay passing a physical. Terms of the deal were yet to be determined.

Tanguay, 29, was acquired by the Canadiens from Calgary last off-season, but after a promising start, his season was derailed by shoulder injuries. He missed 28 games to injury.

Tanguay spent his first six NHL seasons with the Colorado Avalanche, winning the Stanley Cup in 2001. He spent the next two seasons in Calgary. A rumoured rift between Tanguay and Flames coach Mike Keenan reportedly led to Tanguay’s trade to Montreal.

Tanguay, a Ste-Justine, Que., native, was the 12th player selected in the 1998 NHL entry draft. In 659 games during nine NHL seasons, Tanguay has scored 193 goals and added 387 assists.

Guillaume Latendresse stays with the Canadiens for another season

Guillaume Latendresse

Guillaume Latendresse

Finally a Canadien player that decided to stay with Montreal for another season. After the recent changes it’s good news that Latendresse !
“I think we made some good changes,” Latendresse said Wednesday after agreeing to a one-year contract with the Canadiens. Latendresse will earn $803,000, a slight raise from last season. He had a cap hit of $850,000 in 2008-09, but that reflected the signing bonus from his entry-level contract.

It will be the Ste-Catherine, Que., native’s fourth season with the Habs. He has 82 points (46 goals, 36 assists) with 133 penalty minutes in 209 regular-season games with Montreal.

Latendresse was selected in the second round by the Canadiens, 45th overall, in the 2005 draft.
“I don’t know any of the new guys, but I talked with some people who know them and they told me they’re good guys,” Latendresse said of the wholesale changes which saw the Canadiens bring in veterans like Scott Gomez, Brian Gionta and Mike Cammalleri, while bidding adieu to 10 unrestricted free agents, including captain Saku Koivu, Alex Kovalev and Alex Tanguay.

“I just want to keep getting faster and stronger,” Latendresse said when asked about his offseason goals.

Travis Moen and Paul Mara now playing with the Canadiens

The Montreal Canadiens are undergoing some major changes. The whole team has changed!

Moen, 27, was signed to a three-year contract. The Stewart Valley, Sask., native split time last season with Anaheim and San Jose. He scored seven goals and nine assists in 92 games.

“Travis Moen is a character player,” said Canadiens GM Bob Gainey in a statement. “He is versatile, and he plays hard. His size and style will contribute to adding physicality to our team.”

Moen began his NHL career with Chicago in 2003 and has compiled 29 goals and 27 assists in 362 games, with 487 penalty minutes. He was a clutch performer for Anaheim’s Stanley Cup team in 2007, scoring seven goals and five assists in 21 playoff games.

Earlier in the day, Montreal announced the signing of defenceman Paul Mara to a one-year contract.

The 29-year-old native of Ridgewood, N.J., scored five goals and tallied 21 points in 76 games with the New York Rangers last season.

Mara was selected in the first round (seventh overall) by the Tampa Bay Lightning at the 1997 NHL draft.

The six-foot-four defender has 239 points in 639 NHL games with the Lightning, Phoenix Coyotes, Boston Bruins and Rangers.

Finally a tall player :)
