Braking car windows to steal GPS devices

broken-car-window1You’re in Montreal, you’re parked in the old port on Queen’s street to go eat at Le Local on 700 William Street with your family at 9:00pm. You come out of the restaurant and find the passenger window broken and all your belongings on the passenger seat. All ? Not all.. You’re missing a GPS device (that you hid under your arm rest) and a pair of sun glasses (That were also hid under the arm rest).

You call the cops and all they tell you is to go home and that someone will call you tomorrow to do a police report over the phone. You go home and call your insurance company but they’re closed on the weekend so you need to wait ’til monday. Someone from the SPVM calls you the next morning and takes all the information from you and asks you to call your insurance company and to give them a reference number for the police report. Basically the police tells you that if there are no witnesses, no trace of blood or any trace of anything, they can’t do SH!T !

Monday: Insurance sends you to a garage that is about 10 km from your home. They give you a rented car and they also let you know that you will have to pay 500$. Normally you pay the first 250$ for a car repair but since items got stolen as well (GPS device 400$ and Glasses 300$) then you pay 500$ to get covered for those items as well.

The same month, you hear the same story from another friend. He got his car broken into and got his ipod and gps stolen. Another month later your wife’s sister, parked in the middle of downtown on December 23rd, gets her window broken into and someone steals a big garbage bag full of clothes that she wanted to drop to the salvation army.

You tell your friends about those stories and they tell you they know someone who had his window broken and a gps stolen. You go to the hand carwash and you hear the Taxi driver complaining about the same story that happened to him too. Chances are that if you are reading this, you’re telling yourself “Oh My god !! I know someone too”

THIS IS VERY COMMON IN MONTREAL

And what are the cops doing about it ? NOTHING. I personally asked a head cop of a district (I’m not going to give names) about those incidents and he told me that it is not a priority and that they won’t really do anything about it for now. How shameful…

What does it cost to put 5 cars in Montreal with a GPS device in them, with security cameras and wait for the bait to come.. How difficult is it to stop those criminals ?

A friend of mine told me that those GPS are being sold in bars in Montreal for about 60$. And while he was having a drink in that bar, a different man would come in every 20 mins to sell a stolen gps and there was always a buyer.

MONTREAL we need to put an end to this. We need more security and actions.
